The new fantasy role-playing game by developer Obsidian Entertainment (The Outer Worlds, Grounded) leaves you a lot of freedom and only says no in one point:Avowed has no open world. At least officially. But it quickly turns out in the test: With such a great level design, it ultimately does not matter which term is used.

With the inner values such as story and quests, Avowed does not quite get to Obsidians 2D role-playing games Pillars of Eternity and Tyranny, and the game still needs some patches and bug fixes.

But Avowed inspires with an unexpected focus on parkour and exploration, fun fighting and a game world that makes a lot different from real open worlds and yet a lot better.

Fits you if ...

  • ... you always do all the side tasks before you continue the main story.
  • ... motivated to search for hidden appreciation in the long term.

  • ... you expect a credible world simulation as at Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2.
  • ... you never leave the main path and always ignores branches.

Evaluation due to bugs

In the test phase, Avowed crashed us four times on a PC. There were also small to moderate quest bugs three times. A side quest could not be concluded, an important story decision was sometimes misinterpreted by the game and towards the end the logbook did not come after the main quest.

The errors are known obsidian, but a patch that was already set up before the Advanced Access release has not changed anything. Other testers were spared from such bugs. Until the problems are resolved, we pull three points off the overall ranking.
