Reports of a faulty iPhone alarm clock have been around for well over ten years now, but many users are still reporting problems today. Sometimes the alarm clock doesn't ring at all, sometimes at the wrong time. LoudThe VergeApple promised in April 2024 that it would work on a solution.

However, it doesn't seem to have worked as desired. Reddit user bryanlolwut published a post on the topic in early January. His alarm was set for 10:30 a.m. but went off at 12:42 a.m. instead.

The entry now has over 2,000 upvotes and 150 comments. Many of those affected speak out and talk about similar experiences. Incidentally, the problem does not seem to be limited to a specific iPhone model or operating system version.

Possible cause

The reason why the alarm clock does not ring or rings at the wrong time is completely unclear. Such reports have sometimes appeared more frequently in the past when Apple released a software update.

It is obvious that the problems are caused by a software error, also because Apple itself announced a fix. However, it is unclear why not all iPhone users are affected. In some cases it could also be a matter of setting - for example if the alarm tone is so quiet that it is simply not heard.

Solutions

There are different approaches to fix the alarm clock problem. To do this, you should first check some settings and, if in doubt, reset your iPhone.

Check volume

First check whether the volume of your alarm tone may be set too low and therefore you cannot hear the alarm clock.

There are two places to check this:

  • Go to Settings»Sounds & Haptics«.
  • You'll find it at the topVolume sliderof notifications. This applies not only to the ringtone, but also to the alarm tone

Do you use the Apple Health sleep plan on your iPhone? Then check the volume again here, as it works independently of the ringtone.

  • Open yoursAlarm clock appon iPhone.
  • At the top of your alarm list you should see a separate alarm that says»Sleep | Wake up"is titled.
  • Tap next to the time"Change".
  • Scroll down a bit and check/change theVolume for “Sounds & Haptics”.

Install software update

Check whether your iPhone is up to date. Go to Settings"Generally">»Software update«and checks for updates. If one exists, install it and see if it has fixed the error.

Disable Face ID feature

The iPhone sometimes reduces the volume of notifications when you look at the screen. This is a special feature of Face ID. Some users report that deactivating this solved their alarm clock problem. The feature may not have worked properly for them.

You can find the option in the settings»Face ID & Code«. Deactivate the function here as a test“Attention-sensitive functions”.

Restart

If that doesn't help, turn your iPhone off completely and then turn it back on. A restart can sometimes resolve problems in the software.

If nothing helps: load factory settings

If that doesn't help, you basically only have one choice:Resets the iPhone to factory settings and deletes it completely.

My recommendation:Don't restore the iPhone from a backup afterwards, but rather set it up from scratch. This means more work, but you prevent possible errors from being imported again via backup.

You should definitely do the following before resetting:

  • , so your data is backed up in case anything goes wrong. This means you are on the safe side and can always restore your smartphone from the backup if in doubt.
  • If necessary, you can also use a separate one for WhatsAppCreate WhatsApp backup.
  • Uses iCloud to sync important data outside of a backup. This makes the new setup much easier for you.

Turn on iCloud sync and reset iPhone

  • Go to Settings and tap your name at the top.
  • Then choose»iCloud«.
  • Tap next to“backed up in iCloud”on»Show all«.
  • You can now activate cloud synchronization for various apps in the list, such as photos, emails, messages or contacts. These are then stored in the cloud independently of the actual backup.

If you have activated the backup and iCloud synchronization, it is best to wait a while so that the data is actually saved in the cloud. It's best to connect the iPhone to the charging cable, activate WiFi and wait one to two hours to be on the safe side.

Reset your iPhone now. You can find the option in the settings"Generally">»Transfer/Reset iPhone«. Select the option»Delete all content & settings«, only then will your iPhone be completely reset. Then follow the instructions on the screen.

The iPhone will restart and you will have to set it up again. ChooseBe sure to set it up manuallyand the option»Configure as new iPhone" and not "Restore from iCloud Backup" or something similar.

Thanks to iCloud synchronization, your most important data such as contacts, messages, etc. end up back on the device when it is connected to the Internet. However, you will have to download many of your apps again from the App Store and also reset all settings such as ringtones etc.

TheResetting and setting up again is a lot of workand should be the last step if nothing else works. But it is not uncommon for any software problems to be eliminated.
