The Markle Sparkle – Royal Wedding tipples with Gemma Wade

Unless you’ve been under a rock, you’ll know that this weekend THE wedding of the year is taking place at Windsor Castle. Millions of people are expected to tune in to watch Prince Harry and Meghan Markle wed and we don’t know about you, but we’re very excited!

Thank goodness for Gemma Wade, who has created a bespoke Manchester gin cocktail, the perfect accompaniment to the day’s events.

What’s a wedding without the food right? Don’t worry, Gemma’s previous post is full of wedding day nibbles, from sausage rolls to coronation chicken tacos, she’s got it covered.

The Palace have confirmed they’ve chosen ‘a lemon elderflower cake that will incorporate the bright flavours of spring. It will be covered with buttercream and decorated with fresh flowers.’

When I saw the flavours of the Violet Bakery wedding cake, I immediately thought of this cocktail. California trees groan with citrus, and gin and elderflower couldn’t be more English. So they marry together as perfectly as the royal couple.

If you need any more excuses to make this cocktail, you can turn to the fantastic health benefits of the ingredients:

Grapefruit – full of vitamin C it helps to strengthen the immune system, boost metabolism and reduce stress

Elderflower – contains anti inflammatory and antiseptic properties, which help to fight coughs & colds, skin irritations and stress.

Kombucha – A rich source of probiotics, it provides your gut with healthy bacteria which can help to combat inflammation, improve digestion and aid weight loss.

Keep it stress-free by making the cocktail ahead, keep it in the fridge in a jug or bottle and top up with soda water or Kombucha as you serve it – letting your guests choose how much they want to water it down.

Ingredients to make one drink (to make more, just remember – equal parts of all the liquids)

1 length of grapefruit rind – I use a potato peeler to get mine

60ml (2 oz) fresh grapefruit juice (around half a grapefruit)

60ml (2 oz) St Germain or any elderflower liqueur

60ml (2 oz) Manchester Gin OR Seedlip

60ml (2 oz) sparkling water, Cava OR Kombucha

To make:

  1. Peel the grapefruit with a vegetable peeler to get a long length of zest. Put the zest in a chilled glass.
  2. Mix all the ingredients except the soda water in a jug with a large cube of ice, taste and adjust. If you want more sweetness add more elderflower.
  3. Serve and top up with sparkling water, Cava or Kombucha.
